Garage doors are architectural doors primarily designed for vehicle parking areas.

1.1 Garage Door

A garage door is a type of building door primarily used for vehicle parking areas.

Overhead garage doors feature a door leaf composed of multiple connected panels, a balancing system, and fixed guide rails. Rollers are mounted on the sides of the door leaf; when opening, the leaf moves along the rails, turning and lifting upwards. Operation can be achieved via an automated drive system or manually.


1.1.1 Architectural Terms for the Door Opening

Door Opening: The structural opening where the garage door is installed.

Lintel (Headroom): The distance from the top edge of the door opening to the interior ceiling.

Side Clearance (Jamb): The distance from the side edges of the opening to the adjacent interior walls.

Depth: The depth of the space behind the opening.

Obstruction Beam: A structural beam located inside the opening area that runs parallel to the lintel and protrudes downwards from the ceiling.


1.1.2 Door Panel

Door Panel: A panel-like component that makes up the door leaf and serves to close off the opening. These are categorized into single-layer panels and composite panels.

Door Leaf: The movable panel-like assembly composed of multiple individual door panels. Various connection methods exist between panels to accommodate different installation requirements.

Single-layer Door Panel: A panel made from a single type of material; typically refers to a panel made from a single layer of profiled steel sheet.

Composite Door Panel: A panel made from two or more materials; typically refers to a panel with inner and outer layers of profiled steel sheet and a core filled with sound-insulating and thermal-insulating materials.

Finger-safe Door Panel: A panel designed with a specific structure to prevent finger-pinching injuries during normal operation and under various usage conditions.

Standard Door Panel: A panel that—in contrast to the finger-safe type—lacks specific design features to prevent finger-pinching injuries during operation.1.1.3

Counterbalance system: A system incorporating spring devices to facilitate the opening and closing of the door panel and enhance safety; it balances the weight of the door panel by generating an upward force approximately equal to that weight.


Extension spring: A spring in the garage door system that utilizes tensile force to counterbalance the weight of the door panel.

Torsion spring flange: A specialized component installed at both ends of a torsion spring to secure it in place.

Torsion spring shaft center bracket: A structural component used to support the torsion spring shaft and mount the torsion spring's stationary flange.


1.1.4 Terms for installation method categories

Standard installation method: Also known as the single-track installation method; an installation system for overhead garage doors that operates normally without special measures, using a single horizontal track on each side (left and right). It is primarily suitable for openings with a lintel height of at least 350 mm.

Low-headroom installation method: Also known as the double-track installation method; an installation system for overhead garage doors that requires two horizontal tracks on each side (left and right) to operate normally. It is primarily suitable for openings with a lintel height between 220 mm and 350 mm. Ultra-low headroom installation: An installation method for overhead sectional garage doors where the torsion spring balancing system is positioned at the rear of the garage. It is primarily used in situations where the lintel height is insufficient and the opening height is low, making the other two installation methods unfeasible.

Extension spring type: An installation method for overhead sectional garage doors that utilizes an extension spring balancing system.

Shaft-drive type: An installation method in which the door opener directly drives the rotation of the torsion spring shaft, thereby moving the door panel up and down. It is mainly suitable for door openings with a secondary beam where a standard center-mounted opener cannot be installed.

Single-panel roll-up door (color-coated steel): A roll-up door composed of a single-piece door panel roll-formed from high-strength color-coated steel, a torsion spring balancing system, and a guide/noise-reduction system.

Internal mount type: An installation method where the roll-up door is positioned on the inner side of the door jamb.

External mount type: An installation method where the roll-up door is positioned on the outer side of the door opening.

Intermediate mount type: An installation method where the roll-up door is positioned within the thickness of the door opening.


1.1.5 Terminology for guide rails and brackets

Guide rail: A channel that provides guidance and partial support for the door panel during operation.

Vertical guide rail: A guide rail installed in a vertical orientation.

Horizontal guide rail: Also known as a curved rail; used at the bend where the door panel transitions and for the horizontal section of the track.

Double rail (low-headroom rail): An assembly consisting of two horizontal guide rails combined vertically. It is specifically designed for garage door installations where the lintel height is low.

Side-sliding top rail: The overhead rail that bears the load and provides guidance when using the side-sliding installation method. Side-slide bottom track: A bottom track that provides guidance when a side-sliding installation method is used.

Vertical-to-curved track connector: A specialized structural component connecting the vertical track and the curved track of the garage door.

Curved track connector: A specialized structural component that connects the horizontal track (single track) to the vertical-to-curved track connector in a standard installation configuration.

1.1.6 Terminology for hinges and roller brackets

Hinge: Classified into intermediate hinges and end hinges based on installation location. An intermediate hinge connects two adjacent door panels, allowing them to rotate relative to each other; an end hinge connects two adjacent door panels, allowing relative rotation while also accommodating the roller shaft. They are further classified by door panel structure into standard hinges and anti-pinch hinges.

Bottom bracket: A structural component installed on the back of the bottom door panel, used for attaching the lifting cable and mounting the roller shaft.

Rear-mounted spring bottom bracket: A specialized bottom bracket for rear-mounted torsion spring configurations, where the lifting cable attachment point is located outside the track.

Top bracket: A structural component installed on the back of the top door panel, used to support the roller shaft and adjust the fore-aft position of the door panel.

Self-locking capability of the door opener: The ability of the door opener to prevent the motor shaft from reversing—and consequently opening the door—under the influence of external forces.

Manual locking during power outage: A function allowing the operator to manually lock the garage door regardless of the door panel's position during a power failure.

Vertical lift type: An installation method for industrial doors where the door panel moves vertically upward as a single unit along guide rails.

Multi-layer vertical lift type: An installation method for industrial doors consisting of multiple door panels stacked front-to-back, moving vertically up and down in layers via guide rails and a drive system.

Standard installation type: An installation method for sectional overhead industrial doors that requires no special measures and operates using single-piece horizontal tracks on both sides; primarily suitable for openings with a lintel height of at least 600mm.

High-lift type: An installation method for sectional overhead industrial doors where the door panel moves vertically upward along guide rails for a certain distance before undergoing a segmented change in direction.

Top-mounted installation type: An installation method for vertical lift industrial doors where the torsion spring balancing system is located above the fully opened door panel.

Mid-beam installation type: An installation method for vertical lift industrial doors where the torsion spring balancing system is located at the mid-section of the fully opened door panel.

Bottom-load-bearing type: An installation method for sliding industrial doors where the weight of the door panel is supported by a floor-mounted track.

Bottom-load-bearing type with fixed motor: An installation method for bottom-load-bearing industrial doors where the door opener motor is mounted in a fixed position.

Bottom-load-bearing type with moving motor: An installation method for bottom-load-bearing industrial doors where the door opener motor is mounted on the door panel and moves along with it. Sliding-folding type: An installation method for sliding industrial doors where multiple door panels are connected by hinges and progressively fold against one another during the opening process.

Side-sliding type: An installation method for industrial doors where the door slides laterally along the wall surface via guide rails and executes a turning movement at the door jamb on one side.

Roller shutter type: An installation method for industrial doors where the movement of the shutter-style door panel—and thus its opening and closing—is driven by the rotation of a winding shaft or drum.

Single-panel industrial rolling door: An industrial rolling door assembly comprising a single-piece door panel roll-formed from high-strength color-coated steel, a torsion spring balancing system, and a guide/noise-reduction system; compared to residential garage roller shutters, these generally feature larger panel areas and weights, and require higher safety standards.

Double-layer slat industrial rolling door: An industrial rolling door featuring a shutter-style panel constructed from aluminum alloy or steel profiles with internal sound and thermal insulation filling.


1.2.2 Terminology for specialized accessories

Buffer/booster: A mechanism installed at the end of the guide rail that provides cushioning when the door panel reaches its limit position and assists with movement during startup.

Wicket door (pedestrian door): A small door incorporated into the panel of a larger industrial door to facilitate pedestrian access.

Vision panel (window): A transparent window installed in the door panel to increase interior natural lighting.

Cylindrical drum: A wire rope drum with a cylindrical shape, suitable for standard and low-headroom installation configurations.

Torsion spring breakage protection device: A safety protection mechanism designed to rapidly prevent the movement of the torsion spring shaft and stop the door panel from sliding downward in the event of a torsion spring failure in the door's counterbalance system.
